Settings for Different Applications
while using Elango Tamil 2000

Indian Languages differ a lot from English and many programs have most of the default options set as per English. While working with Indian Languages, some programs like MS Office, PageMaker, CorelDraw. etc. may encounter some problems with certain features. To avoid these problems certain options are disabled in the programs to make the software work properly with Indian Languages.

The symptoms in such cases are typically:

a) Characters getting replaced by another.
b) Characters getting replaced by another after
            pressing Space or Enter.
c) Some characters like quote marks do not appear
            at all.
d) It appears all right on screen, but prints a different
            character on the printouts.

The general settings which need to be disabled while using Indian Languages are:

a) Preserving upper and lower case
b) Not capitalizing first character
c) Not capitalizing sentences
d) Not using small quote.

The specific settings which need to be taken care of in various applications are given in the following sections:

1. Displaying the Tamil font name in Font window



When using language fonts in any of the applications of Office 2000 like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Front Page and Outlook Express, the font names in the font list menu of these applications will appear as in un-readable Tamil encoding and looks like the figure given above. To avoid this confusion, the following settings are set in the applications mentioned above.

1.1. From the Tools menu, select Customize option.
1.2. Select the Options tab in the customize window.
1.3. Remove the tick mark from the option - (see the below screen)
* List font names in their font - NO
1.4. Close the window.

Now the Font list menu will appear in English as shown below.


This setting is common to all the applications of MS Office 2000.

2. Settings for MS Word

2.1 Tools Menu:



2.1.1 Select the AutoCorrect option and remove the tick-marks from the following options

��* Correct TWo INitial, CApitals - NO
��* Capitalize first letter of sentences - NO
��* Capitalize names of days - NO
��* Correct accidental usage of cAPS LOCK key - NO
��* Replace text as you type - NO



2.1.2. Select the "Auto-format as you type"option and remove the tick-marks from the following options

��* "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes" - NO
��* Ordinals (1st) with superscript - NO
��* Fractions (1/2) with fraction character (1/2)-NO
��* Symbol characters (--) with symbols (--) - NO
��* *Bold* and _Italic_ with real formatting - NO
��* Internet and network paths with hyperlinks - NO



2.1.3. Select the " AutoFormat " option and remove the tick-marks from the following options and press OK.

��* "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes" - NO
��* Ordinals (1st) with superscript - NO
��* Fractions (1/2) with fraction character (1/2)-NO
��* Symbol characters (--) with symbols (--)- NO
��* *Bold* and _underline_with real formatting - NO
��* Internet and network paths with hyperlinks - NO



2.2. Tools Menu: Select the "Options" and "Spelling and Grammar" sub-option and remove the tick-marks from the following options and press OK.

��* Check spelling as you type - NO
��* Always suggest corrections - NO
��* Check grammar as you type - NO
��* Check grammar with spelling - NO



2.3. Format Menu: Select "Font" option and remove the tick-marks from the following options and press OK.

��* Small caps - NO



3. Settings for MS Excel

3.1. Setting the Font: Select all the cells you would be using for data entry in Indian languages. Select the required Elango font from the font list menu. Set the required font size. By doing this, you can avoid repetitive work of setting the font and its size.



3.2 Go to Tools menu, and select AutoCorrect option. Remove the tick-marks from the following options and press OK.

��* Capitalize first letter of sentences - NO
��* Capitalize names of days - NO
��* Correct accidental usage of cAPS LOCK key - NO
��* Replace text as you type - NO



3.3. In the Tools menu select Options... and


3.3.1. Choose Edit Tab and remove the tick-marks from the following option

��* Enable AutoComplete for cell values - NO



3.3.2. Choose the General Tab (in the same Tools => Options...), choose any one the ELANGO fonts (TAB or TAM) in the �"Standard font" box and set the size in the "Size" box and press OK.



4. Settings for MS PowerPoint

4.1. Go to Tools menu, and select AutoCorrect option remove the tick-marks from the following options

��* Correct TWo INitial, CApitals - NO
��* Capitalize first letter of sentences - NO
��* Capitalize names of days - NO
��* Correct accidental usage of cAPS LOCK key - NO
��* Replace text as you type - NO



4.2. Go to Tools menu and select Options...



4.2.1. Choose on Spelling and Style tab and remove the tick-marks from the following options

��* Check Spelling as you type - NO
��* Always suggest corrections - NO



5. Settings for Adobe PageMaker

5.1. Go to File menu, and select the Preferences > General option > Preferences dialog box, click on the More button remove the tick mark from the option
> Use typographer's quotes and press OK.



5.2. Go to Type menu, and > Paragraph option. In the Paragraph dialog box, click the Spacing button. In the Spacing Attributes dialog box, set the Letter space parameters Minimum, Desired and Maximum to zero and press OK and OK again.



6. Settings for CorelDraw

6.1. Go to Tools menu, and select the Options... option. Select Type Assist in the left column. Remove the tick-marks from the following options and press OK.

��* Capitalize first letter of sentences - NO
��* Change straight quotes to typographic quotes - NO
��* Correct two initial, consecutive capitals - NO
��* Capitalize names of days - NO
��* Replace text while typing - NO.



7. Using with E-mail Software

7.1. Procedure to send and receive Tamil e-mails using Outlook Express

To send Tamil messages:



7.1.1. Open Elango Tamil Interface. Set your Keyboard Layout as you wish, Font Encoding as TAB-bilingual (recommended) and Application as Outlook Mail Setting for Outlook Express.

7.1.2. Open Outlook Express. Click on New Message button. Choose any one the TAB fonts if �you had selected TAB encoding or any of the TAM font if you had selected the TAM encoding. Set font size as you wish.

7.1.3. Press Scroll-Lock ON to enable Elango Keyboard Driver and start typing in Tamil.

7.1.4. Press Scroll-Lock OFF and type in English with out change of font. If you had selected TAM encoding and TAM fonts, you have to change the font to English before typing in English.�

7.1.5. Attach Font: While sending the Tamil message first time to anybody, attach any one the TAB font along with your mail to enable the receiver to read your messages in Tamil. If the receiver is not having any TAB font already installed, the receiver should save the TAB font to his Windows => Font folder. After saving, open the Windows folder, open fonts folder. In View menu click on Refresh option.

To read Tamil messages:

7.1.6. Open Outlook Express. Click on View menu => press Encodings => select "UserDefined".

7.1.7. Go to the Tools menu => select Options... In the Options dialogue box click on Read tab. In the Read dialogue box, click Fonts. In the Fonts dialogue box, choose the following settings:

(i) Font settings => User Defined.

(ii) Proportional Fonts => Select your Tamil font for reading the Tamil mails. You have to select any TAB or TAM font to read TAB or TAM encoded Tamil messages respectively. If the messages are not readable, it may be due to the wrong choice of font type selection. In such situations, change the font type to either TAM or TAB and check for readability. If the message is not readable using both TAB and TAM, please check whether the Encoding in View menu is set correctly to "User Defined". If the message is still not readable, then the message may be in a non-standard encoding and you may have to request for the respective font from the Sender and add it to your font folder and repeat the procedure given in (i) and (ii).

(iii) Fixed-Width Font => Select one of the English fonts listed for reading the English messages and the mail subject, etc.

(iv) Click on "Set as Default" to save the settings permanently in your Outlook Express mail software.�

7.2. Procedure to send and receive Tamil e-mail using Netscape Mail.

To Send Tamil e-Mails :



7.2.1. Open Elango Tamil Interface. Set your Keyboard Layout as you wish, Font Encoding as TAB-Bilingual (recommended) and Application as Word/WordPad/Netscape Setting for Netscape Mail.

7.2.2. Open Netscape Mail. Click on New Message button. Choose any one the TAB font (recommended). Set font size as you wish.

7.2.3. Press Scroll-Lock ON to enable Elango Keyboard Driver.

7.2.4. Start to type in Tamil. Press Scroll-Lock OFF, type English with out changing the font again.

7.2.5. Before sending the message, attach any one the TAB fonts along with your mail to view your message.(Only for the first time)

7.2.6. The recipient has to save the font file into the local Hard Disk by right clicking on the attachment by mouse and add the font from the control menu by the following route :

Control panel > Font Options > File > Install New

OR save the font file directly into the fonts folder in the Windows folder. After saving, open Windows folder, open fonts folder. In View menu click on Refresh option. Now close windows and fonts folders.

To Receive Tamil e-Mails :

7.2.7. Under Edit menu select Preferences. In the Preferences window slect

Category => Appearance => click on Fonts.

7.2.8. In the next Fonts window select the following :

Encoding => User Defined
Variable Width Font => set as any TAB font and Size
Fixed Width Font => any default English font eg. Courier
and Size
Click on - Use my default fonts, overriding document
Click OK.

7.2.9. Under View� menu select Encoding and click on User Defined.

7.2.10. Now you should be able to read all Tamil e-mails received in TAB fonts.
